Real quick photo update. Just got back from the Fairy Meadow (Bill Putnam) Hut up in the Northern Selkirks of BC. Great times were had. It started off with endless fun pillows & powder then transitioned into huge open alpine glacial terrain for the second half…not too bad. Now I am off to Salt Lake City and will be back next week. Whew! More to come…Cheers!

All right a few of my favorites from the paddle on Ross Lake last weekend…just a note though all of these pictures were taken on a very “outdated” Canon 20D camera because my camera is in for repair from my trip up to Canada a few weeks ago. This goes to show that the equipment does not make as big of a difference in the quality of a photo as marketing or others would like you to believe.

Overall this trip was great, Ross Lake is a not so hidden gem (right of HWY 20) that is truly not taken advantage of by the millions of people that live out here. There were hardly any people boating on the lake, the views are great and the camping is plush & right on the water. Bridget and I’s friends who also moved out from Salt Lake City around the time we did, Todd & Annalisa, joined us on this photographic paddle. One great thing about kayaking is you do not have to pack light, we can bring fresh food, wine, extra layers, heavy tents, extra water and it all fits and does not seem to slow the kayaks down that much.

I know, I know, paddling is becoming a rather repetitious theme on the blog lately but I had one more trip to try and do before the winter grey enters our every day life and the weather was perfect this weekend. Here is a little sneak peak with more to come later this week.

Just a photo post here, Bridget and I went out with Stacy and Colin on Monday night to paddle a little while on the bay during sunset. I was a bit weary since some clouds were looming, but they only acted as sponges to soak up all the pink, blue, yellow and purple rays the sun let off as it disappeared behind the horizon. Amazing sunset!

Also here is just a few shots I like that were taken a few weeks ago in the front yard with Bridget during that golden yellow light that shines the few hours before the sun goes down.

Kayaking Beyond

Little Car, Big Kayak.

I never would have thought that paddling would be a hobby that I picked up, at least not now, but that is not the case. This past Thursday I headed up to the Jervis Inlet in British Columbia with Hunter Vernor in hopes of paddling from the end of the Princess Louisa Inlet back down to Egmont with a couple of friends from Beyond Malibu who were just getting done with their summer of volunteering up there.

The weather was gorgeous (including the rain), the company was great and the paddling was mostly peaceful and relaxing. Paddling really is turning into an activity that I enjoy, mainly because I have no ambitions with it. When I sit down into the seat of a kayak I do not know what is fast, what is slow, time goals, or anything. It is what hiking or climbing should be to me but I am just to damn ambitious with those activities and that ambition can get in the way of the relaxing enjoyment of the activity. The paddle down the inlet is around 45 miles and everything went pretty well except one thing…my camera.

THIS IS NOT GOOD!!! CAMERA MALFUNCTION!!!

It stopped functioning how I needed it to. The screen went out, I couldn’t shoot in manual or any “advanced” modes, everything just went south. The good news is it still took pictures though but it was in point and shoot mode which means I had no power to influence the photograph other than the angle! This was especially bad news because I was up there taking photos on a contract with Necky, Extrasport and Carlisle. I tried to keep it all in perspective realizing that at least I can get shots, I am still kayaking with great people in an amazing location, etc…but dejection was still looming large.

A Paddlin’ Celebration

Bridget & I just got back from a weekend of celebration and “work”. We had a very delayed celebration, 4 months actually, of our 3 year anniversary then I also fit in some photography. All in all it was great. The weather was perfect on Saturday with rain moving in on Sunday which actually made for some good shots. Here’s a little sneak peak…
